"Inclusion and diversity in all its forms can significantly enhance our culture, diversity of thought, employee engagement and ultimately our bottom line"

State Street Corporation (NYSE: STT) is today celebrating the 10 year anniversary of its PRIDE UK and Friends employee network. This collection of employees voluntarily work together to provide personal and professional development opportunities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual (LGBTQ+) employees and their supporters.

In collaboration with State Street’s Global Inclusion initiative and State Street PRIDE networks in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, State Street’s PRIDE UK and Friends provides an environment to promote understanding, acceptance and awareness for LGBTQ+ employees; a point of reference for discussing LGBTQ+ issues; support for the creation of an inclusive working environment; networking and development opportunities as well as helping to strengthen ties with the wider LGBTQ+ community.

Additionally, the employee network acts as the “voice of the employee” to help drive the LGBTQ+ agenda and champion inclusion and diversity policies at State Street. The network has helped influence the enhancement of employee benefits and policies to be more LGBTQ+ inclusive, including parental, adoption and bereavement leave policies. The network has also provided reverse mentoring opportunities and supported LGBTQ+ inclusive management training for senior executives.

“Inclusion and diversity in all its forms can significantly enhance our culture, diversity of thought, employee engagement and ultimately our bottom line,” said Kim Newell Chebator, Client Executive and long-standing Executive Sponsor of Global PRIDE UK and Friends. “While it is vital to have the support and influence of leadership teams, everyone has a role to play in creating an inclusive environment and in helping pave the way for real societal change. How we interact with each other, the words we use and the decisions we make all contribute to how inclusive, or not, our workplace is. Taking measures to create a change in culture to make it more inclusive is no easy task, and this is why the work and initiatives being driven by our employee networks are so important.”

The launch of State Street’s Global Allies program in 2017 further enhanced the awareness of the PRIDE network and generated greater awareness on the importance of Allies to the LGBTQ+ community both in the workplace and in the community. The UK network supports and volunteers with  a number of LGBTQ+ community partners, such as Positive East, an East London charity supporting those living with HIV and Opening Doors, a befriending charity for elder and isolated members of the LGBTQ+ community in London.

In honour of PRIDE month, State Street invited Barbara Hoskings, a former civil servant who served as a press officer for two prime ministers, Harold Wilson and Edward Heath, before becoming deputy chairman of Westcountry Television, an ITV company, to discuss with employees her recent autobiography, Exceeding My Brief, and the courageous decision to come out as a lesbian at the age of 91. State Street employees will also be marching in this year’s London Pride Parade on Saturday 6th July.
